An excerpt from Thorns on Willpower

In the community of recovering addicts and alcoholics the concept of recovery is well established and deeply personal. For them, the traditional idea of recovery draws on the following premises: First, we must allow God to be in charge of our lives, and, second, we cannot solve our problems by our own strength. Willpower works against recovery. We must surrender our problems. God must help us, and we need to let Him—or we will not survive. In summation, recovery must be based upon endless trust in God.
