God allows emotional and physical pain to have a precise and necessary influence in our lives. Pain is personalized. God knows how much we need and how much we can handle. We cannot function or survive when pain becomes too great. On the other hand, with too little pain we would not be motivated to survive at all! I am part of an addictions group @ our church called Refuge. Last Monday, a young lady confessed that someone had told her, in essence, "not to pray for God to let things be done" because that was a sure way to welcome pain into your life. Our group leader reminder her, and everyone else, that the Christian walk is characterized by maturity. As we mature, we understand pain and trials as the way the our Lord is refining us---until the work is complete.
