About the Author

Dr. Steven Stiles, a pastor, is a faculty member at Bethany University in Scotts Valley, California, where he teaches addiction studies. He also teaches at Western Seminary in San Jose and has lectured internationally on addictions. He is the Clinical Director at New Life Community Services in Santa Cruz, California which provides emergency shelter and drug and alcohol treatment. He is a graduate of the American Baptist Seminary of the West (D.Min.) and maintains counselor certification through the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CADCII). Dr. Stiles is the author of Thorns in the Heart, A Christian’s Guide to Dealing with Recovery, Recovery for Codependency, Journey on the Hard Side of Miracles and the soon to be released Gotchyaa.

Trusting God With Our Pain

What we believe about the place of pain in our lives determines how we try to cope with it. If we believe that pain belongs in our lives because God has ordained it, then we will be more inclined to accept it. When stress and pain enter our lives we must choose to either resist or leave our situation in God’s hands. It is very difficult to live both ways – to trust God with our pain and try to control it at the same time. -Thorns in the Heart

He is Risen!

He is Risen!

Some deny the resurrection. Others acknowledge the resurrection but consider it a matter to worry about another day. But the scripture asks more of us.

Consider:

1 Corinthians 15:3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

1 Corinthians 15:13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

The resurrection then, demands that we look at life beyond our simple human experience and even beyond the fact that we have an eternal home with the one who loves us.

The resurrection underlies our reality. Jesus, the resurrected One lives within us, and because of that fact our daily experience of faith reflects the beauty of the very first Easter day!

 He is Risen indeed!

Felt Pain Has To Stop Somewhere

God is concerned about our pain whether He chooses to halt it or not. In His mercy He has placed natural limits on both our emotional and physical discomfort. Felt pain has to stop somewhere. - Thorns in the Heart

Pain may be bitter medicine, yet the destruction it prevents is far more distasteful. Whether we like it or not we need the constant influence of physical and emotional pain to keep us alive and healthy by keeping us in touch with our vulnerability as we walk on earth. - Thorns in the Heart

Trusting God is a commitment.

Trusting is a commitment. It is to let go of the control of our lives. It implies we will yield our lives to God no matter what difficulty comes our way. If one day, like Job, you awake to find your possessions gone and your family destroyed, how would you respond as a Christian? You could say God simply wants you to believe or pray the problem away. You could say you have been unfairly treated. You could trust God completely with whatever He allows to happen to you, and respond the way He leads you. - Thorns in the Heart

Although intellectually we may acknowledge that it is God who makes us new, living that conviction is more difficult. We are prone to solving our own problems, fighting our own war with pain, and inadvertently trusting in our own strength. In the community of recovering addicts and alcoholics the concept of recovery is well established and deeply personal. For them, the traditional idea of recovery draws on the following premises: First, we must allow God to be in charge of our lives, and, second, we cannot solve our problems by our own strength. Willpower works against recovery. We must surrender our problems. God must help us, and we need to let Him—or we will not survive. In summation, recovery must be based upon endless trust in God.
